From Old Tires to Door Handles: Pyrum will recycle used tires from Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the future

Dillingen / Saar, April 3, 2023 – Pyrum Innovations AG (“Pyrum,” the “Company,” ISIN: DE000A2G8ZX8), a pioneering company that sustainably recycles scrap tires using its globally patented, unique pyrolysis technology, is taking the next step in its collaboration with Mercedes-Benz AG. In the future, the company will recycle several hundred metric tons of end-of-life tires annually from the Mercedes-Benz Used Parts Center. Using its own innovative process, the company produces pyrolysis oil from the end-of-life tires. The pyrolysis oil produced is then delivered to its partner, BASF SE, which uses the oil as a raw material—in combination with biomethane—to manufacture high-quality plastics for the production of Mercedes-Benz vehicle components.

The used tires are delivered from the Mercedes-Benz Used Parts Center and disposed of at Pyrum’s main plant in Dillingen. Pyrum has been supplying pyrolysis oil to BASF since last year. BASF then feeds this oil, along with biomethane derived from agricultural waste, into the early stages of production at its Verbund facility and uses it to produce a plastic of near-new quality that is certified according to the so-called “mass balance method.” As a result, the first production models—such as the Mercedes-Benz EQE and S-Class—have been equipped with door handles made from this material since last year. In addition, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is set to feature a crash absorber made from the recycled plastic. Further applications for this innovative recycled material are being explored.

Both products are thus considered sustainable and renewable raw materials. Pyrum has also received ISO 14001 certification for its environmental management system and ISO 9001 certification for its quality management system. These achievements have also been recognized by international experts in the tire industry. For example, Pyrum was honored in the “Best Tire Recycling Innovation” category at the inaugural Recircle Awards and was nominated for the Saarland State Grand Prize for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises.
