Closed production cycle for bicycle tyres

Pyrum supplies recycled carbon black (rCB) to Schwalbe for the production of new bicycle tyres

  • Series delivery of carbon black (recovered Carbon Black, rCB) by Pyrum to Schwalbe has begun
  • The cycle of bicycle tyre production is thus completely closed thanks to the already initiated “Schwalbe Recycling System”
  • Sustainably produced bicycle tyres to be launched on the market in June 2023

Dillingen /Saar, 28 November 2022 – Pyrum Innovations AG (“Pyrum”), a pioneering company that sustainably recycles used tyres with its globally patented, unique pyrolysis technology, announces the first delivery of recycled carbon black (rCB) to Ralf Bohle GmbH with its Schwalbe brand. The rCB comes from old bicycle tyres that Schwalbe collects from specialist dealers throughout Germany with its “Schwalbe Recycling System”. Pyrum then takes over the mechanical processing and pyrolytic recycling of the old tyres at its pyrolysis plant in Dillingen. Schwalbe is now starting production of the first bicycle tyre to be made entirely from rCB. The tyre will be presented in June 2023 at the world’s largest bicycle trade fair Eurobike in Frankfurt and will subsequently be available in stores.

Pascal Klein, CEO of Pyrum Innovations AG: “One of our declared goals is to achieve a circular economy concept for the recycling of used tyres in the medium to long term. Together with our partner, Ralf Bohle GmbH and its Schwalbe brand, we have now come a big step closer to achieving this goal for bicycle tyres.”

The rCB was delivered to Schwalbe as part of the commissioning of the pelletising system at the main plant in Dillingen. The pelletiser increases the transportability of the rCB and thus facilitates the further processing of the raw material. As a result, the rCB delivery volume can be significantly increased. In addition, production lines 2 and 3 at the site are expected to go into operation in the first half of 2023 and significantly increase the processing capacity of used tyres – including used bicycle tyres. The official operating licence for the expansion has already been granted.

Back in July 2022, Pyrum and Ralf Bohle GmbH had already presented the EurobikeThe “Schwalbe Recycling System” for used bicycle tyres was unveiled at the 8th trade fair. The system enables the complete recycling of used tyres from all brands. To this end, Schwalbe has established a collection network so that used bicycle tyres can be handed in to all participating specialist dealers, which Schwalbe then collects and delivers to Pyrum.

Frank Bohle, Managing Director of Ralf Bohle GmbH: “The response to our Schwalbe Recycling System has been overwhelming. After starting with around 50 participating specialist dealers at the beginning of the year, we now have over 1,200 participating dealers across Germany. We are now starting production of the first bicycle tyre that uses Pyrum’s rCB. Our medium-term goal is to produce all Schwalbe tyres from recycled carbon black and we want to continue to lead the way as pioneers with our innovative recycling solutions.”

About Pyrum Innovations AG

With its patented pyrolysis technology, Pyrum Innovations AG is active in the attractive recycling market for used tyres and various plastics. Pyrum’s pyrolysis process is largely energy self-sufficient and, according to the Fraunhofer Institute, saves significantly more CO2 emissions than today’s standard recycling processes for used tyres – especially compared to incineration in cement plants – and produces new raw materials such as pyrolysis oil, gas and recycled carbon black (rCB) from the waste used as input materials. In this way, Pyrum closes the material cycle and pursues a 100% sustainable business model. As a pioneer, Pyrum Innovations AG was the first company in the waste tyre recycling sector to receive REACH registration from the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) for the pyrolysis oil it produces back in 2018. This means that the oil is recognised as an official raw material that can be used in production processes. In addition, Pyrum has received ISCC PLUS certification for the pyrolysis oil and the rCB. Both products are therefore recognised as sustainable and renewable raw materials. Pyrum has also received ISO 14001 certification for its environmental management system and ISO 9001 certification for its quality management system. These successes have also been recognised by international experts in the tyre industry. For example, Pyrum was honoured at the first Recircle Awards in the category Best Tyre Recycling Innovation and has been a finalist for the German SME award three times in a row.
